Literacy development at Thomas
Jefferson School is viewed by staff as one of the most important curricular areas to
strengthen in our students. We have a
primary and an intermediate literacy coordinator who have gone through
extensive literacy training and on-going professional development. They serve as coaches for teachers in all
aspects of literacy. Most of the
teachers have taken a 40 hour graduate class taught by the literacy
coordinators as well as continued 20 hour follow-up classes on in-service
days. We are committed to literacy! A comprehensive literacy program has the
following components: Reading, Writing and Word Study. Each of these components has several
